Breakthrough research performed at the University of Crete School of Medicine and collaborators, lead by Professor George Chamilos, was published at the scientific journal “Nature” showing how Albumin orchestrates the host defense against mucormycosis, an opportunistic lethal fungal infection (Nature 649, 693–702; 2026) . The publication received commentaries by both Nature and Science journals as “a remarkable piece of work” stating that “what is very exciting is the realization that molecules not typically associated with immunity can make major contributions to host defense”, explaining the increased incidence of fungal infection in diabetic and Covid19 patients (Science, News). The work “provides a long-awaited step forward, highlighting how careful molecular analysis of an unexplained clinical observation can open therapeutic avenues to explore” (Nature, News and Views).
