Giorgos Chamilos is a Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Clinical Microbiology and Microbial Pathogenesis at the Medical School, University of Crete (research group websitehttps://cmmp.med.uoc.gr) since March 2016, and an Affiliated Researcher at the FORTH/IMBB since February 2018.

Dr. Chamilos has been an attending physician in Internal Medicine with a focus on infectious diseases at the University Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI) and affiliated researcher with the University of Crete (2009–2016).

Dr. Chamilos’ research group (06/2009) focuses on research in the immunology and pathogenesis of invasive fungal diseases and the mechanisms of immune deactivation in sepsis. The group employs innovative assays, ex vivo models of infection in human phagocytes, and in vivo infection models in transgenic mice and Drosophila melanogaster. Current research activities focus on elucidating the molecular mechanisms of intracellular and extracellular inhibition of pathogenic fungal growth, with an emphasis on the role of autophagy in regulating phagosome maturation.
